The wonky plonky wonderfully wobbly jamboree jangler Joe Ziffer fully slaps boot to ball with ten (10) spectacular homemade popsiclesque songs collectively called Long Shadows. Each ditty an insight into a life observed through a unique and special window: one’s imagination runs a marathon when time passes slowly. For fans of Kevin Ayers, Pip Proud and the days where one could make an earnest living writing bangers for pop groups. Play it loud at the traffic lights or on the beach while enjoying a spritz. Take it camping in the mountains with your friends. Most of all though, listen to it when you’re in the comfort of your own home wearing track pants and slippers and drinking a nice cup of tea. The keen listener will observe hints of the ups, the downs, loneliness, a friendly old dog sleeping at one’s feet, summer rain on a tin roof, boredom, the bubbling wonder of the questing mind, real proper connexions, flying machines and the ever present potential for positive change and growth. This album contains a complexity that takes more than just a single listen to comprehend. After months of frequent listening I’m still digesting its beauty, energy, and emotional intelligence. Initially I drew similarities to some of my other favorite recordings, but now it stands alone as a testament of what four lovely humans from the other side of the planet can create when they invest their total selves to a working.
